Living at Rocky Fork Lake, Ohio

Rocky Fork Lake sits just east of Hillsboro in Highland County, inside Rocky Fork State Park. The lake covers about 2,080 acres with roughly 31 miles of shoreline, and it has been part of Ohio's state park system since 1950. The park around it offers marinas, boat ramps, swimming beaches, picnic areas, hiking trails and a nature center.

The homes around the lake are a true mix: year-round houses, weekend cabins and cottages, newer small builds, and plenty of building lots, mostly in Paint and Marshall townships. Some buyers want a full-time home a short drive from Uptown Hillsboro. Others want a getaway for boating, fishing and kayaking.

Rocky Fork Lake market snapshot

As of late October 2026, there are about two dozen active listings in the area around the lake, more than half of them lots and land. What to know before you buy at the lake

Near the lake versus on the lake. True waterfront is rare and priced accordingly. Many homes are a short drive or golf cart ride from a ramp or marina. We can tell you which is which.
Wells, septic and lots. Many lake-area homes use private wells and septic systems. If you are buying a lot to build on, confirm with the Highland County Health Department that it can support a septic system.
How you will use it changes your financing. A primary residence may qualify for a USDA loan with no down payment; a second home or rental will not.
